I have installed the Shinko tourmasters 120 front with 170 rear. Love the wider rear and no issues with either front/rear oversized. No rubbing or modifications needed at all. I put these on back in last June 2011 and rode them hard at the Thunder in the Valley rally. First impression was "Damn these babies hug the road in the rain!" Even better on the dry pavement. I am not a avid rider in rain, but i rode all weekend in the rain and I was more confident in my riding knowing that these tires grabbed the road very well in the rain.

All thumbs up here!!!

How do you think they will compare to the ME 880s on tread life?

Ive run them all,the shinko is too sticky for me,I like to do looooonnnggggggggggg burn outs and with the shinko I couldnt, I was affraid I would break something. Right now Im running the Metzler 880 and it does what I want, sticks well but when I want to rip one I can. The Bridgestone was to hard,I didnt like it in the rain. This is my latest burn out , new pavement and a metzler 880. I paced it off: 90 feet in first and 170 in second hit third and let off. This pic is looking from the end of second back towards where I started

Hi Michael,

To be honest the ME880 is a good tire too for the vmax. Most of us either run the ME880 or the Shinko Tourmasters. The tourmaster 230 runs a 120/90V18. As Rick stated, the shinko's are very stick. I ride in the rain and wanted stability and this gives me what I wanted. The wheels grab very well in the rain and excellent on the dry pavement. Take note, a sticky tire will wear quicker than a harder compound such as the ME880's but they are half the price too.

I have a Metzeler Lasertech 110/80 V 8 up front and a Shinko TourMaster 230 150/90 v15 out back.
Next time I think I'll get the Shinko 170/80 V15 though, just for the extra witdh.
So far I'm very happy with this combo, I just put the Shinko on so I can't speak to it's mileage.
The lasertech has held up well for 2 summers and Ill have to replace it sometime next year and it handles well without any fromt end wobble that I've had with some other front tries.

I just replaced my Stock Bridgestone tire off my 2005 Vmax, I had 7700 mile on it and I ride pretty hard. I really like the Bridgestone tire and never had any problems with it at all, the raised black letters really sets off my black rim with the red stripe.

Hmmm, guess my tires won't be of much help.... But if anyone is running 17" wheels here goes.

Rear Dunlop Sportmax Q2 200/50/17 I do believe
Front Dunlop Sportmax QR4 120/70/17 again I am going off memory so I may be a bit off.

Love the tires, but the front is a dual compound supersport track tire. Haven't hit the rain with them yet so no report on wet traction.

On the back I have a Bridgestone Spitfire S11. It's an ok tire, good traction all in all, although in the rain, given it is a VMAX we are talking about, it still slips a bit if you ride hard. I had an ME880 Marathon before; great tire, goes forever even riding it hard, but again, not a sticky tire, so be careful. I remember it being pretty bad in the rain even on a straight line. In all fairness, the tire was a bit worn when I did that riding.
On the front, I think I have a bridgestone too.

I have Shinkos on my 85 . Actually have had them on 3 of my Max's and they worked good for me. My 89 has a 180/55/17 pirelli diablo on the rear & a michelin pilot power on the front have not rode it a whole lot yet but what I have it feels ggod.

17" in the back running a 180/55/17 Metzler Z6, A Z6 in front too 110/80/18. I really like the combination. Great rain tires and handel like a dream. The price is good on these tires. Plus they lower me a little less than 1/2 inch.

Avon Venom here on my '06. I just bought the bike about 3 weeks ago so my experience on the tires is limited. Hasn' seen rain but so far I like them, a lot. Stock size up front and a 170 on stock 15 out back.

I too have had both the Shinko (bias) and now the Metzler (radials). Did not get much life out of the Shinko's but they were very sticky. I put the radial on the back first (18 inch RC sport with a ME 880). I ran this way for about 1500 miles until the Shinko was spent, then fitted a 17 inch Thundercat wheel with a ME880. Each change was dramatic. No problem at all running a radial in the back and a bias in front. I do now have a wobble at approx. 100 mph which i think is the rear swing arm flexing. I have delrin motor mounts, gold valve emulators and the second from the stiffist springs from racetech in the front end. Really do love the way it turns in now with the 17 inch front. The ME880 needs heat before it starts to stick, but handles the weight well. Everything is a trade off in the end. I run the Pilot 3's on my BMW K1200GT, it also is heavy. They do not like the weight at all but are real sticky. I usually ride 2 up on it but rear radials last 2500 miles. I think it will get 880's as well.

Right now I am running stock tires and rims on my 99 vmax. I want a wider wheel and tire. What is the widest I can run without mods.

cmax,
170/80-15 is the widest tire you can mount on a Stock VMax Rear Wheel.
