Hi, I just picked up a 2003 Vmax with 2300 miles on it and I'm excited to get it going. I was looking for some advice as to what maintanence issues I should address before I start riding it full time. Also I'm planning on changing the tires as well, so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time!

Hello,

Congrats on your vmax purchase. You'll find in time how addictive this bike can be to own and ride. The skies the limit on what can be done to these machines. As to basic maintenance, there are several fixes to problematic design flows of the vmax. Here is a link of some good resources:

http://v4musclebike.com/forums/articl ... b92a16396073ea9e1c1c&c=31

The main things most do to start are the following:

Furbur fix for the steering head bearing (wobble)
Crimp fix for maximum charging
Once a year do a Shotgun carb clean then carb sync

Besides those, just ride the bike and enjoy her. The vboost is addicting for the powerband it gives you.

As to tires, there are many preferences out there and everyone has their own opinion. For stock, most run either the Shinko tourmasters or the Metzler ME880's. Shinkos are a softer tread and give great traction, but wear out quickly whereas the Metzler's are stiffer and last longer. You can run a rear tire up to a 170 without clearance issues. I've done it on the 3 that I've owned.

Again, welcome the club!
Enjoy and ride safe....
