Oil light comes on during hard acceleration ?

Bike is in excellent condition
oil level is fine
Oil is fresh

If I accelerate normally the light does not come on.

Any thoughts ?

That is typical behavior of the vmax. When you rider her hard, you drain the oil pan therefore the light comes on. Nothing to worry about. Just make sure your oil level when off is atleast halfway viewable in the oil fill glass on the bottom right side under the water pump.

Enjoy and ride safe!

Thanks Mike.

One last question, hopefully not a dumb one.....
But, do you check it while on the center stand or just balanced on both wheels ?

I'm sure it's in the manual, but I was curious how you do it?

Thanks.

Hi Greg,

No question is dumb unless you dont ask it! Everyone has to learn somwhow so ask away!!! Anyhow, you should check your oil while on its centerstand since all is level. The only other way is if you have a rear spool lifter to pickup the bike. A kickstand wouldnt be level and would leave you to over doing the oil which wouldnt be good.

I have had my 94 Vmax for a little over two years now and on many ocassions pin the throttle. I have never seen the 'low oil " light come on, but also at that rate of acceleration I am paying more attention to the road than my gauges/lights. I am not picking on anyone but to think that a low oil light illuminating on heavy acceleration would have been noted during testing and development of the Vmax and corrected before producing the bike for sale. Under heavy acceleration oil flow and pressure are most critical and having a problem with that should not have made it in to production. Just my two cenrts do not take offence

Many years ago I posed just this question to a couple of Factory reps who had a direct hand in the original V Max....
Their answer was not what you would expect....

It was well known that the Low oil level sending unit was in the front of the oil pan... What you have to remember is that the engine was not designed specifically for the V Max model... It was being produced for the Venture Royal Touring model... The forward placement of the oil sending unit was used as a secondary warning system for the big road bike...

When the engine was modified for the V Max (top end) the placement of the sending unit was considered, but due to time constraints as well as the cost of re-tooling and re machining the engine castings and pan it was decided to just leave it the way it was.... Besides Yamaha saw a way to utilize an engine that had already been proven and keep the initial cost of the VMax down!

We in the V max community have learned to just ignore the warning light during hard acceleration. And we have even turned it around... your not a REAL VMaxer if you don't get that light to LIGHT UP when you leave the line!!!! After all it's all in the wrist!

You must have a good ear to know that your not redlineing? That is if your not looking at the gauges when your in the throtle?I'm not so sure I would want to trust that.An awful big risk of blowing it!

I have developed a pretty good ear in the nearly thirty years of riding I have done, but in the riding I do I don't find it necessary to bounce the engine off the redline and/or rev limiter. I prefer to ride a paced ride some time casual other times very spirited on old seldom traveled back country roads. Doing so I can keep engine revs in line and only need to between a couple of gears. I have no need to prove myself or my motorcycles to anyone. I own a small collection of motorcycles that when they were new were either significant by their accomplishments or unique by their manufacture. They range in origin from Japanese, Italian, British and American.

Some of us like to push our maxes, especialy while playing with another bike that provokes us.In my 40 years of riding,I don"t trust myself enough to get close enough to get that close to redline, not to hurt the performance and get my vmax wooped.kudos to you if u can.I will watch my tach for a little insurance. Not ready to buy a new engine.

We all like to push our Vmaxes, if we did not we would not own one. We obviously come from two differents schools of riding philosophies. I would think after 40 years of riding experience you would not fall into provacation from other riders. But I tell you what I will do, IF I ever gernade an engine from NOT watching the gauges, I will post pics of it on here so you can enjoy my misery. Providing I am still a member because I am quite sure my closing remark willl get me banned and I am pretty sure you hear this everytime you stop for a break while out on your Vmax......"nice Vmax...sorry about your penis"

Thanks for the post and answers to the original question!
I've had this happen a few times and of course it gave me great cause for concern. Knowing that it's (reasonably) ok so long as my oil level correct relieves a LOT of anxiety.

Hi William,
Yamalube is way too expensive. There are plenty of oils to run in the vmax, you just have to make sure they have some sort of friction additive in them. I've run valvoline car oil, but the one that works best and keeps your clutch working great is Rotella 15w-40 oil. You can usually find it at Walmart for less than $15 a gallon

http://www.walmart.com/ip/ROTELLA-550 ... a-T-1-gal-15W-40/44944739

The clutch has no adjustments, but there are modifications that you can do for better performance as follows:
1. buy aftermarket adjustable levers
2. replace clutch with a barnett spring kit
3, replace clutch with a DoubleD fix

I personally run adjustable levers and the DoubleD fix. Without the levers, a DoubleD is very hard on the hand to pull the clutch but its very responsive. The Barnett is a nice clutch setup too.

Yes the Rotella T 15W-40 is diesel oil and works great in the vmax. I just picked up a Bosch 3323 oil filter and Rotella over the weekend to change my oil out for this season.
